Broad-leaf Rush - native (Juncus planifolius)

Family: Juncaceae (Rush family).

Native.

Occurrence: Generally uncommon.

Identifcation:

• the leaves form a basal tuft; the leaf width is variable; it can vary between 1 and 10mm
• the leaves are quite hairless
• the flowers are in globular clusters
• it typically grows to 10-20cm high.

The usually broad leaves tufted at the base make this a distinctive rush. Other members of the rush family, the wood rushes (Luzula species) also have flat leaves, but differ in that the leaves are hairy. Field Rushes are common in the heathy dry forests.
