Water Lilies - introduced (*Nymphaea alba)

Family: Nymphaeaceae (Water Lily family).

Natives of tropical areas.

Occurrence: Water Lilies are sometimes planted as ornamentals. They grow on dams and shallow water.

Identification:

• the leaves are large, and may reach 30 cm in diameter
• the leaves are circular with a deep notch at the base, and float on the surface
• the flowers are white.

Several species and varieties are planted. Water Lily may spread to cover a large surface. They do not thrive on larger dams unless protected from wave action.
