Red Fescue - introduced (*Festuca rubra)

Native to Europe, north Africa, Asia and North America. Perennial. C3.

Family. Poaceae (Grass family).

Other names: Creeping Fescue.

Identification:

• the flower cluster is narrow
• the glumes are shorter than the lemmas
• the spikelets have about 6 shortly-awned lemmas
• the leaves are rolled
• The ligules are membranous, c1mm long, and truncate.

It is planted as a lawn grass and sometimes escapes. Most often seen in flower in long-unmown lawns.

The leaves of Red Fescue are tightly rolled and appear cylindrical, even when fresh.
